How Much does it Cost to Remodel or Renovate a Small Bathroom?

Is your small bathroom in need of a serious makeover?  No doubt you’re wondering about cost, options and well…. how you can get the appearance of having more space in your small bathroom, working on a limited budget?  The cost to remodel a small bathroom can vary dramatically and this remodeling guide will give you a clear idea of what you can expect.

Size of the Bathroom

Bathrooms are one of the more expensive rooms to remodel, per square foot, because the space is usually pretty much filled with vanities, cabinets, sinks, tubs and showers, etc.  The larger the bathroom is, the more it will cost to renovate.

Bathroom Fixture Choices

A fiberglass tub/shower enclosure can be affordable and attractive in a bathroom remodeling project.  Separate bathroom showers and tubs will cost more, especially if the tub is a garden tub and the shower is tiled. Choosing a luxurious steam shower or jetted tub or spa will take the remodeling costs to the next level.

While those are the most expensive fixtures, even the sink, sink faucet, toilet or other elements you choose will have an impact on the remodeling prices for the job.

Countertops in a Small Bathroom

Basic laminate countertops are inexpensive. Granite and marble are the most expensive.  In between, you’ll find a range of remodeling prices for soapstone, solid surface, quartz, stainless steel, tile, and other materials. Even the choice of tile you choose for countertops, backsplashes or the shower will have an impact. Define your budget first and then you’ll be able to work with remodeling contractors to select the right materials, fixtures, countertops, vanity, etc., for your bathroom remodeling project.

Plumbing and Electrical

If you plan to have the location of plumbing altered or new plumbing installed, that will increase remodeling costs significantly.  So will new electrical lines, outlets or wiring, even in a small bath remodeling project. Talk to your plumbing or electrical contractors about how you can save by relocating as little as possible.

Bottom Line to Small Bathroom Remodeling

So how much does it cost to remodel or renovate a small sized bathroom?  While only remodeling contractors can give you exact costs – and it’s wise to get at least 3 written estimates – we can give you an idea of what to expect. In most cases, remodeling a small bathroom will cost $75 to $150 per square foot.  For example, consider an 8×12 bath remodeling project.  That’s 96 square feet.  On the low end of our estimate, your remodeling costs would be $7,200.  On the high end, the price would be $14,400.  A cost of $9,000 to $12,000 will produce a very nice new bathroom.

Doing some of the work might reduce your remodeling prices.  Choosing the top of the line in everything might cause your costs to exceed our estimates.  Work with remodeling contractors to find the right elements for your budget and a remodeled bathroom you’ll be very happy with.
