Small Bathroom Vanities, Choosing the Right Size to Fit Your Floorplan

Just because you have a small bathroom doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice quality or appearance when it comes to selecting a vanity. In this Complete Remodeling guide we go over some considerations when working with limited space. Whether your choice of décor is antique, traditional, modern or contemporary we will help you make the right choice. We will go over common vanity sizes, vanity sink options, double sink considerations and will point you in the right direction to complete your project

Most home centers and supply stores offer a limited selection of vanities. You can overcome that inconvenience by going online and checking out bathroom vanities by style, availability and price. In many cases you can use the internet to sort through the product and come up with the look you want. Once you have that feel you can either order online or ask one of our contractors to help you match that look.

We are providing typical dimensions for vanities which may not apply if you are working with limited bathroom space. Your usable space should guide your size selection and with our help you will be able to find the perfect vanity for your project.

Vanity depth is usually 21 inches deep but can go as low as 16 inches.

Vanity heights will range between 31 to 35 inches and vary to accommodate how tall the users are. Many people love not having to bend over to use the sink but remember the children and maybe a wooden step stool will be needed if you go with a taller vanity.

Vanity widths on average will range between 24 to 48 inches and vanities that provide room for two sinks usually start at 48 inches. Vanities for rooms with really limited space can have the same height as regular vanities, but again, only 16 inches in depth and a width that is usually held to 18 inches.  Remember your working space will decide your actual sizes and all these numbers.

So what are your vanity space needs? One of the main purposes of a vanity is to hide the pipes and pluming. The other reason is storing stuff. In many homes the vanity can become a kind of catch all and can get loaded down with items that really aren’t needed every morning. Sure you need the dental stuff and some personal grooming things but why not make a list of the items you really need to keep in the vanity?  Do you really need all those cosmetics or can some be left on the dresser? How about the cleaning products, maybe under the kitchen sink would be a better location? Extra towels could be kept in the utility room, the hair dryer moved to the bedroom. Once you look at what really has to be in the vanity you may be surprised as to how little room you really do need! Plus if you’re not drying your hair in the bathroom maybe someone else could get in there! Sorry, the guy in me just spoke.

Some sink styles and options to consider are the drop-in, the wall mounted, an under mount and pedestal sink. We will go over all these different sink options in an up and coming vanity sink guide.

If you have a small space and still want a double sink you need to do an important test. Since two people are going to be side by side in this space stand next to each other and brush your teeth. If one of you gets a black eye then that’s too close. Maybe you really don’t have room for the double sink but you just like the look and only one will be in there at a time. Just make sure you are both able to function next to each other if you plan on using the sinks at the same time.

The key to getting the right size vanity for your bathroom is all about the measurements. Make sure you have your numbers right and that they work when you are using the bathroom. Just because something fits in the space does not mean it will flow right or be comfortable in use. So can a contractor help with your choices? What about the plumbing? Mirrors, lighting or faucets does everything fit the way it should.  Again, get a professional opinion if you’re not 100% sure.
