How To Clean Grout Before Resealing
In one of our recent home remodeling guides we spoke of sealing grout and keeping it sealed. In this guide we want to go over a few steps you will need to take before resealing. So what do you need to do before the seal goes on?
It is all about cleaning the grout as you DO NOT want to seal in dirt, mold or mildew.
A spray on mildew and mold remover will work best and is easiest to work with.
Using rubber gloves and eye cover you should thoroughly spray the grout area with the mildew remover. You need to use a cleaner that is specially formulated for mildew and mold as ordinary cleaner will not work properly.
You will need to get in between the tiles and Scrub the Grout to remove any and all build up.
A grout brush or toothbrush should be used. This will take some time so do not be in a hurry. Once done let the treatment sit for at least 20 minutes.
Rinse everything with water and wipe down. You may need to brush and rinse again if you find some hard to remove spots.
Once clean and dry you can now reseal the grout to help protect against future staining and mold.
It is best to clean and reseal the grout once any sign of buildup is detected. Mold, mildew and dirt buildup is a sign that the seal is compromised and it will only get worse and harder to clean if you wait. If the area is large or you find many areas with mold you may want to contact a local contractor to help with the job. A little attention now could save you big time later.
